A story, for your amusement

When I was working in the kitchen, I had very long hair. Of course, something had to be done with it. If I pulled it up, the pressure on my scalp often caused me to get a headache. So I took to wearing one long braid.

Very shortly thereafter, my boss told me the braid wasn't "appropriate." I looked at her in surprise and said, "but this is how Indian women dress!"

The reply, from that gawky midwesterner standing there wearing a freakin' SARI, was: "You're not an Indian."

Depending on my mood, remembering this can cause me to either feel disgruntled or to laugh out loud. It occurs to me that it could be healthy if we were to expose our respective anecdotal insanities from inside the asylum, for the purpose of laughing at them. Sort of like the function Dilbert has for those of us who have suffered working in corporate culture (believe me, Dilbert belongs in the NON-fiction section of the bookstore!!) And now that I think of it, one of the reasons I bought into THAT b.s. was the lessons... remember how they talk about being good little boy/girl workers, doing your best, trying to get to the top, praying for your boss (implication: don't rock the boat by actually saying something about his abusive behavior), etc, etc?
