Correct me if I am wrong here , but from what i understand , copyrights are applicable for a period of 50 years from the day of the writers passing ?
Does that mean copyrights expire around 2002/ 2003 ?

I believe they can be renewed for a while. The rules do change sometimes.........

Up till recently, 50 years was the point when an author's writings become public domain. Walt Disney's works are near or at this point and so the Disney Corporation has appealed for this rule to be extended. While this appeal is in process all other cases are suspended.

Bottom line: Master's writings are still securely in SRF's hands as long as Disney has its boxing gloves on -- and they are BIG hitters.

It's been my understanding that the AY was changed in order for SRF to hold onto the copyrights, i.e., making changes in the works created a NEW work and thus led to a new copyright issue?

As my knowledge of this is very peripheril, can anyone clarify?

The following are NOT in SRF's hands. They are in the public domain:

1. All magazine articles before 1942

2. Early editions of nearly every book by Master: Autobiography of a Yogi, Songs of the Soul, Whispers from Eternity, Metaphysical Meditations, Scientific Healing Affirmations, Science of Religion, Attributes of Success: ALL early editions of these books belong to the world, not to SRF. Most significantly, all of these books are the Master's original writings, unalduterated.

Also, SRF does NOT own a trademark to the Master's name, to his image, to his teachings, to the concept 'self-realization', to many photographs of him.

All these issues were decided during the twelve years of lawsuits filed by SRF against Ananda (at great cost to Ananda). These copyrights and trademarks are SECURELY in the hands of ALL the world, for all time.

Yes they did. But it only affects copyrights that are current, not those that have already expired. Many of SRF's copyrights had already expired, for various reasons. Some of the reasons that copyrights expire, specifically in regard to SRF:

1. Time

2. Forgetting to renew the copyright

3. Renewing the copyright improperly, and thus causing the copyright to expire

The Disney lawsuit will have the effect of prolonging by many years the current, and valid, SRF copyrights- but not the many copyrights that already expired. And importantly, those expired copyrights include most of the original, unaltered works by Master. :D

With respect to item number 2 (the listing of the PY works free from SRF copyrights), do you know where these early works of his can be obtained. I have the first edition of the Autobiography, and the "early" Whispers that I got from SRF, but as to the others I don't know where to go to find them.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Occasionally these items show up on e-bay. It's also quite possible that you'll see some of these early works re-issued now that the legal wranglings are done at last. And maybe someone would be so kind as to publish some of these on the internet.....?

Thanks to username, Redpurusha, and jaijaijai for your valued input. I will contact Amrita; I've gone to their webpage before, but it never seems to be any more than that. I'll try emailing her to inquire further.

As for the magazines, username, before 1942, do you want to sell them, or did you mean something else? They are probably very valuable now as we can not expect SRF to ever print them again. Also the website with the old magazines seems to be very limited with respect to the years that have put up on-line (probably due to copyright issues).
