A shadow is a shadow is a shadow is a shadow
Today we witnessed the most horrific act of terrorism ever aimed against our country. On the news, Peter Jennings asked the big question: If tax payers are spending billions of dollars on anti-terrorism, how could there be such a lack of intelligence to allow four planes to be hijacked and do the damage they did?

General Schwartzkopf (sp?) replied that the U.S. has adequate to superior technology but needs more human intelligence. Of course, he means spies and penetration groups, but that also implies creating more of a psychological awareness of the problem that creates terrorism so that we can diffuse and deal with it before it becomes a problem.

Why hasn't the United States figured this out? We've been warned, hints have been dropped. There was the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993. Why do we let people like McVeigh slip by? How is it possible to be so unaware of the nature of an escalating situation that we could let the Columbine shooting happen? To be more crass. why do we choose to be so stupid when clues abound? Why do we stick our head in the sand when trouble starts to brew? Why is there such little proactivity? Why must we always triumph in reaction and not in prevention?

I ask these questions because, in our own little way, there is trouble brewing in our spiritual family. All trouble in human nature boils down to what Jung calls the eruption of the shadow or unconsciousness. Because so many live their lives in utter awareness of how it operates, they are baffled when an outside event reflects its workings.

What happened in Oklahoma, Columbine, and today in New York were acts of physical destruction and emotional terror by pathological individuals or groups aimed at a hated other. But they were also case studies in how the shadow works. As devotees it is convenient to call it karma or the test of God, but these are qualitative evaluations merely. They put highly offensive and emotional issues into airtight containers, much like the disposing of nuclear waste, where no one has to deal with them for the time being. But eventually those containers leak. And when they do, what is our backup plan?

I wonder what people were thinking who knew Timothy McVeigh during his dark moments of withdrawal. Was there anybody suspicious enough to bring his change to others' attention? Did anyone try to change his mind? Was there anyone with enough intuitive sensitivity to gather that this was a man who was on the edge and needed help? What about the two teens at Columbine? And today, I wonder about the airline terminal employees who might have ignored that ever so faint a feeling about some of the people who walked through their inspection stations. I'm convinced all the people who had even the slightest molecule of a clue let it go. It couldn't possibly happen to me, to my town, my school....etc. This, my friends, is what we call textbook denial.

And denial is what we in SRF are so much in paralysis about. That's why its of vital importance that we start making more of an assertive investigation into our SRF problem. Lucky for us, the violence we've been subjected to is principly psychological and emotional and definitely within the scope of our power to do something about it.

But a shadow is a shadow is a shadow is a shadow. When human nature is pressed too far, there are consequences and there are victims. Let us take more responsibility for getting something done about our problem. Let us bring every single detail out into the air.

All the above mentioned problems could have been diffused had people acted smarter and more proactively. When we chose denial or take nothing more than a soft interest in our problems, the work of Shiva is never far behind.

Reuters is reporting that Arabic satellite television channel MBC warned Sept. 8 that followers of suspected Saudi terrorist Osama bin Laden were planning a major attack on U.S. and Israeli interests in the next two weeks. Israeli Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer also warned Sept. 10, the day before attacks on U.S. targets in New York and Washington, that "a coalition has been formed recently between terror organizations, Palestinians, Shiites and bin Laden operating against Israeli, American and European targets.” 1850 GMT, 091101

I could not agree more. We have let a lot of people get hurt. The best thing for SRF is to bring SRF leadership's actions out into the open. I totally agree. It is hard to do so, but I am going to start to record some of the treatment I know about here too.
