Let's not be under any illusions, folks. This guy was serious bad trouble. Was he smart? Yes. Did he teach wisdom? Yes. Was he enlightened? No.

Osho devotees have a terrible reputation. Papaji, who was an authentic Indian master, was fascinated by their bizarre behavior, but described the picture he was getting of their mental states as "faxes from hell." My wife was briefly employed by an ardent longtime follower who proved to be an evil nightmare.

I met the woman who had been in charge of Osho where he was imprisoned in the States. At the time she was not the follower of Ammachi she came to be, but she was determined to treat him with respect. She stood up to the warden's attempt to disrobe him. She said, "I don't give a damn what he did, he's still a man of God, and I refuse to humiliate him." The warden relented and said, "Lady, you're working in the wrong place."
