A couple of years ago, after reading the AY, I came across the website wwww.yogananda-dif.org, there I found some eye-opening information on P. Yogananda and SRF that was supported by sound reasoning and historical facts (from what I had read). And recently, I came across a similar site, YoganandaRediscovered with the same resolved dedication to preserving the teachings and spirit of P. Yogananda. For anyone who has had the open-mind to listen to P. Yogananda and reading his literature in the first place, I recommend doing the same with these sources. I do not recommend, however, to accept everything that is given in them, just read the literature, question, and draw your own conclusions. Truth is not afraid of questions.

A couple of questions and concerns I have follow.

Why do we call the SRF International Headquarters, the "Mother Center"? I never heard or read of P. Yogananda calling it that. What's wrong with "SRF headquarters?" or "Mt. Washington" as Yogananda often referred to it?

If P. Yogananda's name change from Paramhansa to Paramahansa is the right thing to do, or more accurate in the sanskrit language, then why didn't P. Yogandna write it with the extra 'a' himself? If anyone is to have the most accurate knowledge on the sanskrit language and on writing his own name, wouldn't it be the Master, P. Yogananda? Yogananda's most advanced disciple and second president of SRF, St. Lynn (Rajarsi Janakananda), did not make any changes to the name, but later, so it is argued, his name has also been changed for sanskrit accuracy.

I personally like wearing a christian cross every once in a while, and it seems as though (from photos) that P. Yogananda liked to wear it also. Why would a devotee of Yogandanda, especially the leaders of SRF, decide to take it out of the photo later on, after his death? This I find to be very insulting to the character and personality of P. Yogananda (which was and is a reflection of God and his Love), for the sake of PR of SRF? What about the Master?

Now, some questions and observations on YoganandaRediscovered:

Why was Walters kicked out of SRF? I am only speculating here because I do not have all the facts. Either he had an expansive, aggressive way of teaching (P.Y.'s teachings) which was against the way of the other SRF leaders (mostly the ladies). That is, he wasn't going along with their vision for Master's work.

Or, there indeed was some misconduct, sexual and bribes, that was too embarresing for SRF to expose to the public. This would explain why Walters did not recieve a fair trial or chance to defend himself against the allegations, and his quick termination as acting vice president and board member of Self-Realization Fellowship. The PR image of SRF could not be sacrificed for giving Walters a chance to defend himself publicly and openly. (Which many years later would come out anyway in different ways).

Or, he was following the Master's teachings very well, and attracting too much attention, more than SRF board members would allow?

In conclusion, the Master P. Yogananda and SRF are two different things. Also from my understanding, there are good things to be said of J. Walters and SRF, and also there are bad things to be said of J. Walters and SRF. I think its best, when encountering different people, cultures and organizations in life, we take the good and leave the bad behind. Some of the things I think are good concerning J. Walters are: expansive outlook, keeping the teachings original, winning court case (in most instances) regarding the trademarking of self-realization and P.Y.

I love the word 'purusha.' Nice name.

Great post and I too feel much the same way you do. We werent' there when much of this stuff occured so we have to do the best we can, read the available information, and like you said, draw our own conclusions.

I printed out the yogananda-dif.org site when it was up. I heard someplace that SRF said they were going to sue, if the site was not taken down.

Did Yogananda ever study sanskrit? Did he ever get any good at it. If so, please supply source. Thanks

I've recently been reading "An Eagle's Flight" by Abbot George Burke and found his perspective on the dismisal of J. Walters.

If you interested in his opinion, please read his autobiography.

She sure sounds like a charming person. What do you suppose Yogananda saw in her? Who took over the editing of his writings after she was gone? Have they done a better job, worse job, neglected the job?

It's my understanding that Mrinalini Mata is the new chief "editor" of his works and has been working hard on the Second Coming of Christ/New Testament commentaries as of late. I get this information from the yogananda.net board where it is said that DM sent MM to Encinitas to work without distraction to finish the editing.

Someone who was in the monastery, a nun, whom I spoke with a few times told me that one of her jobs was to bring down PY's writings in a paperbag to TM's home in Eagle Rock, I think, a town at the base of the hill at any rate, and she was instructed to set them upon the porch by the front door, and leave. When TM was ready for them to be picked up she repeated the procedure except the nun now picked up the paper bag holding her editings of PY's writings. She didn't see TM at any time.

She says there was a small group of nuns, MM among them, who worked at Mt. Washington to get the paper's assembled to take to TM; and that this was the extent of the "Editorial Department," so vaunted to the members, of SRF.

She was also told by a close direct disciple nun that PY's commentaries on the BG were already in book form at the time of his demise because she was asked by this nun to keep a box at her home for safe keeping, (she had left the ashram by that time). Much later, when the nun requested that she bring the box back, the nun took the BG book out (there were many other items, papers, and other things) and showed it to her, then had her take it downstairs to Uma Mata, which is last she saw of it. This was sometime in the 60's or 70's, according to her account.

What this points up is the lackadaisal attitude of this "guru-trained" disciples toward getting his entire teachings out to his householder disciples, and the whole world. Tapes of kriya initiations by PY would be extremely helpful, as would his commentaries on Patanjali's eightfold path of yoga. Many other treasures lie in the vault of SRF, waiting to see the light of day again.

This has been a very good book thus far into 15 chapters. Like the Aubiography of a Yogi, the beginning is about his childhood and then many miracles and meetings with saints take place. Coming from a catholic background, I find interest in his dealing with Catholicism, Hinduism, SRF, among other things. Ultimately he finds that not one of these fully satisfy him and thus he creates the Light of Christ Monastery. Very well written, I recommend it.

The yogananda-dif.org seems to be the grand daddy of SRF truth websites. I also learned a lot of stuff for the first time through that website. It has been a great service. Good background reading for the new person deciding on a life with SRF.

I am not sure why the rumor started that it was taken down. It is still there. SRF can't sue! People go crazy with those rumors.
