Yogananda's family
FYI: I haven't seen any mention of SRF BOD relations w/ Yogananda's family. In my opinion based upon close friends first-hand knowledge, these dear family devotees have not been honored nor helped by BOD. In fact, they have been neglected and dishonored. The Ghosh family (nephew HareKrishna, wife & children) and relatives of Master still maintain the Gorphar Road Calcutta home of Yogananda's youth, keeping as a shrine the room where Master said he found God, where great saints came to visit B. Ghosh (Y's Father). Yukteswar and others frequented the house. Babaji was said to have come to Master there. HareKrishna (seen in original photos from PY's 1935-36 India trip), looks almost identical to his father, Master's youngest brother Sananda who wrote "Mejda", the personal family story of PY's life. The family are personal friends of many US devotees and consider us Guruji's spiritual family. They have hosted many pilgrims at their home; dear friends of mine were married with their blessings there 3 years ago ! They and Tulsi Bose's family have contributed relics from PY's/Yukteswar's/Lahiri's lives to a "Shrine of the Masters" museum where I volunteer as a docent. HareKrishna has faithfully served his/our Guru all his years. I can't understand why the family has been inadvertantly and/or intentionally cooly treated by the BOD. For those interested, there are more details on the Ghosh family members on the Yogananda-rediscovered.com. site.

Dr. Lewis
I have heard disappointing stories about the treatment of Dr. Lewis' wife (after his passing) too. She was tossed out of the ashram and the Encinitas devotees raised a stink and got SRF to give her a place to live. That was possibly the first action of the spirit of the Walrus!

I believe she lived on San Diego Temple property for years after that but was ignored. Any devotees down there know more about the story?

Re: Dr. Lewis
I used to see "Mama" Lewis frequently at Hollywood Sunday Services in the early 1970's. She was frail looking and somewhat of a spiritual celebrity to me so I didn't impose myself upon her, but she radiated a sense of peace.

I too know that she lived out her last years at a house on the San Diego Temple's grounds. Her memorium article, a transcript of Mrinilini's talk, was published in the magazine back in the late '80's I think it was.

There are other direct disciples that've severed their ties to the SRF organization. Bob Raymer is the leader of Yogacharya Oliver Black's 'village' in up-state Michigan. He was someone who met Master late in Master's life, around 1950 I believe. He visited Master at Mt. Washington just before he died, the first week of March 1952, with a philosphy professor from a small college in Michigan (I think).

Anyway the current edition of 'Paramahansa Yogananda: In Memorium" mentions Master meeting with the professor during this last week, but says nothing of his disciple, Bob Raymer being there also. I believe this to be a deliberate exclusion of Bob Raymer. I also believe it to be for the reason they don't want anyone to have anything to do with direct disciples that aren't in the monastery. These other direct disciples, such as Margaret Bowen, Raymer and others paint a different portrait of our guru than the one SRF tries so hard to exhibit.

One story of Bob Raymer's from this last week. He says Master invited him to stay at Mt. Washington, along with the aforementioned professor. Master invited them to dinner there and talked late into the night, so late that the good professor was nodding off. Well Mr. Raymer said Master just took his forefinger and flicked it toward the sleeping professor who then bolted awake. Master continued talking, later and later into the night and every time the professor nodded off Master used the 'forefinger technique' to 'get his attention,' until finally it was dawn and Master left.

The same thing happened the next night as well. Dinner, talking all night, the forefinger technique, and dawn. Again, the third night the same things happened. Bob Raymer says then, on the 4th day of his stay Master sent word through one of the nuns to have the 'boys maybe bring me flowers."

This was just a day or two before his Biltmore engagement and yet he found time to spend with Bob Raymer and a non-disciple; yet, again, this isn't publisized by SRF. He was too busy with the Ambassador et.al.

The above story can be heard on an Ananda tape (I feel that I should add I'm not a member) of their 100 Year Anniversary of Master's Mahasamadhi. Many of the Indian devotee's appear on it--Master's relatives etc. I recommend it for it's refreshing and wide-open portrait of PY.
