As I sat in the Hollywood church that Easter morning I was struck for the first time with the "Catholicism" of Yogananda as expressed in every church he personally founded. He had always placed two items in the front as the center of attention: a crucifix (not a simple barren cross) and an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.* Obviously he intended the focus to be on Jesus Christ, not the abstract formless Christ of Whom Jesus of Nazareth was a manifestation. Otherwise he would have used a light, a flame, or some more impersonal symbol. But he did not.
