I've personally never heard any SRF monastic tell me, or anyone, to use hong-sau as japa. I've been a member since 69 but haven't attended temple for quite awhile so maybe these days they are, I don't know. I do know that it is used as such by various yogi's in India, but as you noted as well, the lessons don't tell one to use it as japa.

Where have you gotten the impression that SRF makes the claim of Gandhiji being a practicing kriya yogi? I've never heard any of the various minister's say so; nor for that matter have I read in any SRF (or Ananda's for that matter) this claim put forth. Could you please direct me to the source, written if so, where I could update myself?

As for the freedom fighters Yogananda said that he was recruited by some friends to join the cause but turned them down perferring teaching spirituality and yoga; that reported by Kriyananda I think.

I also never heard any SRF minister claim Gandhi was a practicing member of SRF or a disciple of Yogananda’s. Anyone reading the AY might easily get that idea and SRF does nothing to discourage that belief, but they don’t publicly preach it.

I feel that Gandhi was a true seeker and lover of God and therefore would have felt the love of God in Master. As part of that he would have welcomed a discussion about God and an exchange of techniques and practices. I personally have no doubt that Master did explain his version of Kriya and other techniques. This type of exchange is totally consistent with the personalities of both great men. Master traveled the world seeking out saints and doing this.

I only wish I had been there to experience it!

I heard this many time by many monks. They did not use the word japa, nor were they suggesting doing japa in the traditional sense of using a mala and repeating the words for so many malas. What was said was "hong sau is your mantra. Say it in line at the grocery store, in the car in traffic, say it everytime you a few spare moments - in addition to doing hong sau as per the lesson instructions.
