Ex SRF Monk Becomes an Ananda Minister
Each of you submits, or just reads, entries on this bulletin board is invited to contact me at anytime via this board or by fax. I've had a friend with internet access post this for me.

Call me Tyagamoy. I served many vigorous yeas of my life as a resident monastic disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, in training as a brahmachari, first at his Hollywood India Center, then while living at this internationalheadquarters atop Mt./ Washington, But since 1996 I am an Ananda minister ordained by a good friend, direct-disiciple Donald Walters (Kriyananda). Amdist all that has changed, I remain deeply loyal to the Spirit of all our line of Masters being the Arm of God's Almight Force, that sustains Self-Realization Fellowship's existence - both organizations emanating from the One Light of Universal Christ Consciousness. You can reach me by Fax at 602-667-7644

Re: Ex SRF Monk Becomes an Ananda Minister
Hi Tyagamoy!

I always wondered if an SRF monk had become an Ananda member, and you just answered that question. I found my experience with Ananda so refreshing and inspiring, and I wondered if someone who had been "inside SRF" would find it so. Ananda seems to be going in the direction of many of Master's ideals- and as a member of SRF I would love to see our organization doing that as well.

I'm sorry that you don't have direct access to the board. Since I don't have fax, indirect access through this board will have to do, unless you prefer email.

One of my main questions is- what is your take on how each organization is growing towards Master's aims and ideals? Some people find a need to get away from organziations after they've had a bad experience in one. How did you come to embrace being in what has been called the "rival" church?

By the way, I'll be up to Ananda in May to go to Aumkara's wedding and meet Swami Kriyananda.

Why I Embrace Kriyananda and Ananda
Pronam, Pig Ma!

Yes, especially visiting Ananda in '96 for several days, meditating often, especially at their Lahiri Mandir, I left knowing those 800+ acres are sacred, sustained, blessed deeply by God-Christ-Guru. Giving a talk there on Master's chants to 70 residents at the Crystal Hermitage, I felt a truly happy atomsphere of intelligent light and joy in their bright interest and listening power; we easily laughed together. My few remaining doubts, rooted in adamant SRF attitudes and outright pettiness through the years, simply dissolved.

How did I come to "embrace" the rival church? It starts with knowing Kriyananda from 1955 until today: first, as a fellow monk in the Order (our rooms in the ashram at Mt Washington were always adjacent!), then corresponding intellienently with him over the years after leaving the Order. There was never a word from (or an observation of) him justifiying what I well knew about "inside SRF" as an anti-K attitude. He was, is, and will be, to his dying day, simply a deeply dedicated lover of God and his Guru, who knows from many long years of practice of that science for which he is named, YOGODA Kriya Yoga.

In everything I have learned from him over 47 years, Kriyananda has lived a life of strong, intelligent, creative manhood. While cast by SRF leaders, for their own benefit, in only negative terms (never a positive reference), he has always behaved as a nobleman, at no time responding to them with malice. Where righteousness and a sense of true justice is so obviously built into his character, the wonder for me is that direct-disciples of Paramhansa Yogananda have behaved toward him and Ananda with no respect for such principles, wasting a fortune in a ridiculous doomed lawsuit.

My gurubai friend, the first solution for this mess is to get it straight about Kriyananda, J. Donald Walters. SRF leadership attitude toward him simply grew into an ugly evil thing. IT DOESN'T MATTER "WHY?"! The world outside the Mt Washington gate knows him as a good man - a very good man!

It is not necessary to put him on a pedestal. He turns from that sort of thing. And certainly, you don't have to like him. He's unique! But it is, if nothing else, the decent thing to deeply respect him as a direct-disciple who has fulfilled his Guru's directive - creating an authentic World Brotherhood Community, ANANDA, where all our Gurus shine.

Jai Guru Jai Tyagamoy!
Dear Tyagamoy,

Thank you for your courage! I was in Assisi when you were here, yet I did here about the satsang and Swamiji making you an Ananda minister without any fanfare. I believe he said," Consider this an ordination." from his arm chair which you received in your armchair.

Jai Tyagamoy!

Blessing in AUM,

Aumkara

While not a member of Ananda I feel that some of your comments were incorrect.

1) Kriyananda was in USA almost all of last year. The court case you refer to was a civil action, not criminal. I don't know why you made that claim about him fearing arrest, perhaps you heard it from another uninformed SRF member, at any rate it doesn't help the discussion to make such unfounded claims.

2)PY never gave responsibility to Daya Mata when he was alive other than running the office, something done previously by Durga and others. Daya was never appointed by PY to be president of SRF, rather she was voted in by the Board of Directors--just like Kriyananda was voted in as Vice President. Rajasi was the person that PY appointed to be president of SRF, and upon his demise, as I said, Daya was voted in by the Board upon Dr. Lewis' nomination.

Re: Ex SRF Monk Becomes an Ananda Minister
I read The Path years ago but never joined Ananda. When I was in SRF I felt some kind of loyalty issue. When I left SRF I was totally turned off to any organization. Maybe that will change.

I got Kriya initiation from Yogacharya Oliver Black. Yogananda said that of all his disciples, Oliver Black was second in realization only to Rajarsi. After the initiation ceremony in Detroit, we went to Song of the Morning Ranch for the weekend.

One guy had gone to the initiation from Ananda. Yogacharya Oliver Black knew him, was very glad to see him, and glad that he was at Ananda. I was surprised, but Yogacharya Black had a positive attitude about Ananda.

Incidentally Yogacharya didn't begin the initiation ceremony until he had reached a high state of consicousness. The sight of him took my breath away. I did see the spiritual eye when he touched me, and felt power surging from him. It was amazing. I didn't have that experience in later initiations with SRF.

I saw somewhere here too that Yogacharya didn't want his property to be part of SRF. When he left his body, those remaining in charge needed money for Yogacharya's daughter (I think he willed her $100,000 with the property to be used as security). They went to Los Angeles and talked to SRF about turning the Song of the Morning Ranch over to them, but SRF didn't want to spend any money for it. Now I find out they have bought properties costing many times that. I guess they figured they weren't in the business of World Brotherhood Communities.

I asked about Kriyananda in the meditation center I attended. Someone in that group told me that once when SRF monks were visiting (it wasn't Anandamoy, I think it was Turyananda but I'm not sure), he said he asked him what the story was with Kriyananda. The monk told this person, "We told him look...just come back but he didn't want to."

No kidding! If you were thrown out on the street by SRF or anyone else, would you want to go back and set yourself up for more?

I have no direct experience with Ananda. I thought Yogacharya's attitude was surprising but it looked like Ananda was okay in his book.

Can you provide some more detail about the sight of Yogacharya Oliver Black in a high state of consciousness which "took your breath away?" Was it a physical thing which you saw such as a light or some other mystical force around him or coming from him, or, was it something you felt rather than saw with you physical eyes?

I'm not trying to put you on the spot, here. It is just that I have great respect for Yogacharya Oliver Black and am eager for any stories or experiences about him.

Re: Ex SRF Monk Becomes an Ananda Minister
Yogacharya Oliver Black went into a deep meditative state before he began the Kriya initiation, which was in an auditorium in Detroit. He would not begin the initiation until he was in that state. The ceremony began an hour after it was scheduled to begin, and we sat outside the main auditorium waiting for the word to enter. We just meditated outside the room, so we were all deeply relaxed too.

Then we entered the auditorium. He seemed in a very, very deep state by the time we entered. He seemed perfectly relaxed, and his eyes were gazing off into the distance yet his glance seemed to bore right through you.

I think it is telling that Yogacharya Oliver Black, the disciple who Yogananda said was second in realization only to Rajarsi, was glad to see one of the visitors who was from Ananda, and seemed glad that he was at Ananda.

That occurred when we were all seated around him the day after the initiation in the Lodge at his ranch. He told us that the one thing that mattered to him was that we practice our Kriyas. He said he could tell just by looking at us whether or not we were (I had just received Kriya at the initiation ceremony with him, so I had an excuse ).

Used Yogi,

Thanks for the additional details about your experience with Yogacharya Oliver Black. I don't know if you're aware of it or not, but on the Ananda website under Ananda Sanga, branches, Michigan, there's a great tribute to Yogacharya Oliver Black that even includes newspaper articles about him as a yogi. I believe Loren (forget his last name) is the person who maintains that site and runs the Ananda/Detroit group. He's someone who spent a lot of time with Yogacharya, and he shares his memories there.

I saw Yogacharya at the 1970 Convocation. Like you I too was deeply impressed with him. He was so joyous, laughing and laughing in the hallways with devotee's crowding all around him. I remember his talk about PY. One story he told was about a time when he was meditating and PY materialized before him. I forget the rest but that has always stuck in my mind.

Like Rajasi, Yogacharya Oliver Black was a self-made man, a millionaire who (Lorne includes this story on the above webpage) before he met PY said that he couldn't go a block without stopping into a drugstore for all of the ailments he suffered. Quite a change from the man at the Convo!

Thanks,
