The following story is given without the permission of the man involved, so no names are given. The story is related here as an example of the kind of behavior the local devotees have seen for years. This is embarrassing for SRF and should be. But they continue to do these things year after year. By starting to document these stories we can possibly start to embarrass SRF into looking at itself.

A local temple has a disabled man who has been volunteering at the temple since the early 70’s. He had lived in an SRF owned apartment near the temple for over 20 years, living on disability. He had never missed a rent payment. He got behind one month and called SRF to say he would be late. The first time in 20 years.
The next day there was a note in his mailbox evicting him and telling him he had to be out of the apartment by the end of the month. He did move out by the end of the month, having to live in his car. They then almost doubled the rent on the place and rented it to someone else. Los Angeles has rent control and so his rent was less than the current “market rate”.

All this time he was a volunteer at one of the SRF facilities, working many hours during the week to help out. Mother Center found him, after he moved out, and notified him that he was being sued for the unpaid rent PLUS legal expenses. SRF won the judgment and the guy paid up. I doubt if the lawyers were really required, but that is SRF’s style.

All this time the poor person continued to volunteer during the week. A fellow devotee found out about his situation and tried to get SRF to hire him so he at least didn’t have to live out of his car. SRF refused to hire him but sent the man a note saying it was “OK for him to continue to volunteer”. Imagine that kind of attitude being shown by Yogananda! His friend continued to push for him and finally got SRF to hire him. All during this he continuously volunteered for SRF.

After he had been an employee for a month, SRF again sent him a note saying that “since he had no experience they were reducing his salary”. No experience? He accepted this without much complaint and continued to work for SRF for several years.

Which party in this story displayed forgiveness and understanding? Mother Center or this poor disabled devotee living out of his car?
