I will honor my husband, til death do us part
I was doing the dishes, and an old memory came to mind.

I had been dating my boyfriend (now my husband of 16+ years) for a few months when I read the Autobiography of a Yogi. I decided to take Master's words to heart, to not just believe what he said, but to prove it in my life.

So I begin the SRF lessons and started attending San Diego temple. My sweetie had no interest in these things. I decided I wanted to dedicate my life to God and this path, and considered becoming a nun. But first, it was time to break up with my boyfriend.

He didn't understand why, and I'm sure I did a lousy job of explaining. I think I lasted about one week when I rowed out to his boat (he was living on a houseboat located on a mooring) and asked his forgiveness, would he please take me back. When he later asked me to marry him, I in turn asked if he would support me in my spiritual quest. He agreed (and has been absolutely wonderful in keeping his promise), and the rest is history.

We have been very happy, and have prospered together. So when I was doing the dishes, I started to think about this, and realized- I might have joined the ashram 16 years ago!!! I might have been a part of all of the things that go on in there. I think I would have been chewed up and spit out in time.

So now I have a new reason to honor the wonderful man I call my husband. He saved me from the SRF ashram!

Thanks for sharing that. Very beautiful description of the heart chakra's personal expression, which in all honesty isn't removed from Divine devotion.

I went through a similar experience where it was a call from the monastic life in SRF or taking my ministry out to the world. I took it out to the world and am glad for it.

PigMa....

Thanks for that wonderful story! I worked at Mt. Washington for a couple years...several months in the office (I worked in the file room) and several months in the kitchen. I don't think I ever really anticipated that I would enter the ashram....I knew that that would not have been the right place for me. As it was, not for any reasons of overt problems, I couldn't even stay working in that environment. I could go on about that, but I think it belongs in another thread.

In any case, I was living in San Diego (16+ years ago), going to SD temple and met MY husband to be (also not a devotee) at a leisure learning class. He is the most supportive person, of all my endeavors. And what is really wonderful, is that he is always able to be a balancing force, when it comes to SRF. He attends the lectures with me and for the most part enjoys them. But what is interesting is that he can see things from a different perspective and give me a little different take on things. It's been wonderful.

I would have been a miserable nun. The ashram would never have been the place for me. As it is, I feel that I have been given plenty of opportunities to grow spiritually, even if my meditations stink and I don't get the chance to study Yogananda's writings very much (I've got two kids!).

That's a redundant statement. There is no other kind.

Sorry to take so long to reply, Gardendiva!

I've been up at A-nanda doing the yogi in action program, and I purposely kept away from the computer, since I felt I was spending too much time on line.

I'll be posting about my experience under the A-nanda section. Thanks for your comments!

Re: PigMa
Wonderful to hear from someone who knows true love. This is a rare occurance.

True love is greater than all the knowledge in the world. Corinthians 13 tells us this.

I posted a response on the 'Householder-Monastic' debate under 'Householder Vs Monastic'. The reply is equally applicable here.
