Yugas? What Yugas?
Am I the only one who finds this yuga business odd? There isn’t a shred of evidence to support them beyond Yogananda’s or Yukteswar’s say-so. Nada.

I wouldn't think you're the only one but no I don't find it odd. It certainly does contribute to a mythological concept of the world.

The idea of historical Ages does exist even in Western scholarship. Remember that ancient India had it's own system of scholarship; logic, science, etc., now largely overtaken by the Western system. In fact, our Western system of universities came from the Middle East where Islamic and Hebrew scholarship florished.

Besides, it doesn't matter to me what Yuga were in. I never could understand astrology.

It’s not the idea of historical ages that I have trouble with, but the cyclical nature of yuga theory. Yeah, the upward arc seems right in line, but there just isn’t any evidence I’ve seen for the downward arc. There’s scads of evidence for development being linear, but nothing in the archaeological or anthropological record pointing to development being cyclical.

Onetaste, try a spiral, like DNA as a basic symbol. I'm not satisfied with the purely cyclical or the purely linear. Maybe I'm just cranky...;) It seems to me that we return to similar patterns - I know art history. We're currently in a 'Mannerist' (the "Post Modern" - even the name is Mannerist) period after the 'High Renaiscence' of the Modern period. Art History tends to go in spiral-like patterns. It may be more difficult to examine history as a whole that way.

Not a chance I can remember which Dialog it was, but I know the descending arc was described by Plato as a succession of ages; gold, silver, bronze, and (his) present iron.

Plato also gave a detailed image of reincarnation. Suggested that one of the key points of seeking wisdom here was to wisely choose where you go next. Gave an image of the soul of Odysseus in the next world, after his famous misadventures in his last life, choosing the life of a quiet farmer to whom nothing happened other than a long life and a big family.
