Change in permitted readings?
In the late 1980s or early 1990s SRF, through Center Dept., informed meditation groups, centers, and circles that they should not read things in groups written by Master that were published before 1986 or 1989? I'm not sure of the correct year here. Does anyone remember what the correct year was? I'm now wondering, depending on the year, whether this 'decision' could have been influenced by proposed legal action against the other organization and/or if this came as a result of the behest of Legal Dept. and SRF attorneys? I think from an historical perspective one would have to seem what other things were happening in and around SRF at the time.

Does anyone remember this change?

Center Dept. guidelines
AumBoy, the guidance that was issued, both in the Center Bulletins and later in the updated edition of the Manual of Services (copyright 1996, Self-Realization Fellowship), makes the following points:

--that readers should use chiefly the words of PY and other SRF gurus taken from SRF books

--that articles by PY or the SRF president appearing in the SR magazine published after 1976 may be used

--that readers may occasionally use articles by SRF ministers which appear in the SR magazine dated 1979 or later

There are other guidelines listed as well, but none are germane to your question.

I have no idea why, for example, the years 1976 and 1979 are chosen in regards to using stuff from the magazines. My guess is that it had to do with a shift in editorial policy in the magazine in those years, rather than a legal issue (i.e., that the articles by Master which appeared in the magazine from 1976 were more carefully edited, and the same for the articles by ministers appearing from 1979 onward), but this is just a guess.

Hope this helps. (In general terms, I think Center Dept. does a very good job. They have a challenging role to play, trying to encourage and guide meditation groups around the world. It's both a juggling and balancing act, and the monks are often dealing with people they know very little about and trusting that these people will follow guidelines to ensure some uniformity in the services).
