For years I've thought that progress in meditation, e.g., see the spiritual eye, hearing AUM, feeling shakti during and after Kriya, equaled progress on the spiritual path. However, it seems that devotees can experience all these signs of "progress" and still behave as if they never heard of the Yamas and Niyamas in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. As we all know, the Yamas and Niyamas are the cornerstone of the yogic path; yet they get short shrift when push comes to shove in our daily lives! I don't think anyone ever "masters" these ten principles entirely since that would imply human perfection, an oxymoron if ever I heard one! Still, Master told us to "Learn how to behave." That was one of the first things he told many new disciples when they arrived at MW. What I'm reading on this Board is that few monastics in positions of power observe this dictum. How ironic! Am I being too literal with the order of priorities as set forth by Patanjali? Or is there no obvious correlation between advanced meditation experiences and the day-to-day behavior of those who claim to experience them?
