As a church SRF is exempt from paying unemployment insurance for its employees. It would be allowed to pay into the system for employees even though you are not required if you wanted to, but SRF chooses not to.

But, not all states have this exemption for churches. Alaska doesn't and I believe either Washington or Oregon doesn't.
In some other states that do have an exemption it is now up for a vote to require that churches also pay into the system.

With the recent downturn in the economy, I believe some of California's legislators would support the removal of this exemption. If you want to make a difference for SRF's employees, contact your state senator or representative and let them know your views.

Excellent point. Something we can really do to help those being hurt by SRF. Does anyone know where we might look up names and addresses of who to write?
