Flexibility vs. rigidity

Dear operator

I have noticed that now you FORCE some topics to stay at the top of the forums. It is my humble opinion that this does not help at all. It was much better before -- restrictions, rules, limitations, impositions, and, of couse, "shoulds" only take away the spontaneity of the dialogue. It would be even better if the forums would arrange themselves automatically sending the one with the last posting to the top. I know this is not feasible, but why go on "rigidizing" the forums too? Believe me, the present system is annoying; and hard to understand for the new comer.

Sorry for the criticism, but my intention is to help. Thanks for your excellent message board -- Should Free

Re: Suggestions
I agree. However this board is run without approving the posts before they go online. For a while we had a real problem with weird messages. The Walrus is attempting to maintain some minimal control over the content to help the maximum number of people possible. The Walrus is sometimes away from the board for two weeks at a time (due to business travel) and therefore I have locked a few posts at the top of the sections which represent the basic ideals of the board. This gives new people an impression of what the board is about.

I realize this is not perfect but let's keep in mind the goal is to warn the maximum number of people and keep them from getting hurt. Regulars can quickly figure out what is happening.

Re: Suggestions: the Walrus should find a new editor
I suggest that the Walrus should find a new editor, as the current editor is quite incompetent. Just look what he/she did to the "Govindan" thread I started--deleted about 95% of my messages but kept everyone else's on the exact same topics! I think an explanation is called for. Why did the editor leave, for instance, etzchaim's discussions posted while deleting all of mine? In fact, etzchaim was mostly responding to my messages, and the entire thread, with my messages deleted, now makes little sense. In the absence of an explanation, I can only conclude that the editor had some personal grudge against me and deleted my messages for reasons that had nothing whatever to do with their content, substance, usefulness, or value as a contribution to the serious discussion of spiritual topics.

Re: Suggestions: the Walrus should find a new editor
This isn't a criticism, but I have been investigating how to archive the walrus forum for posterity. Entire MP3 sites keep disappearing left and right, it happens. I was on another forum once (not ezboard) where the servers failed and the entire history was lost. Save your posts. I do. I am trying to get permission to mirror the Walrus for archival and research purposes. Failing that perhaps we could agree to split up the categories between us and volunteer to save what we can on our home computers, a daunting task with 10,000 posts. A software robot could probably do it in three or four hours, but I wouldn't dare do it without prior permission from ezboard corp. The cure could be worse than the disease, banned or canceled.

Ez Corp doesn't own the content. Copy away. By the way the data is being backed up but who knows what may happen.

Backup
This is the answer I got from ezbaord:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"We keep backups of the boards, but if you have a search crawler you want to use to make your own backups we don't prohibit that. We don't have a built in feature to let admins make their own backups to store themselves. The search bot hits would be counted on your stats I think, but if you are more than 30 days away from renewal, that won't increase your gold price. Only the last 30 days before renewal counts towards your price.

ezstrangelets"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looks like the anniversary of renewal is Feb. 14, 2004, but I didn't see a 6 month renewal posted for August 2003. Of course I couldn't wait and went ahead last night before ezstrangelets responded but after I got walrus admin ok. It took about five hours and then I aborted to make sure I wasn't in a loop. I got about 2/3 saved and can go in and finish the job via an update, but want to make sure about the 30 day to renewal date mentioned before mirroring again.

REPLY REQUESTED FROM WALRUS
In the Govindan thread, why did the Walrus editor leave etzchaim's discussions posted while deleting 95% of mine? In fact, etzchaim was mostly responding to my messages, and the entire thread, with my messages deleted, now makes little sense. And why has the editor refused to give an explanation despite having been requested to do so?

Does the editor simply have some personal grudge against me? Did he or she delete my messages for reasons that had nothing whatever to do with their content, substance, usefulness, or value as a contribution to the serious discussion of spiritual topics? If not, then why in the world were they deleted?

Re: Suggestions
As SRFwalrus is no longer a public board and therefore useless I think I deleted most of my messages now. This board has become a joke. Good luck.

Re: Suggestions
Well it seems the board opened up again to the public.
Autodestruct cancelled, good for you.
