Why no lay ministers?
Does anyone know who the last lay ministers were? I know about Kamala and Dr. Lewis and I'm sure there were more. I'm guessing that there were no new lay ministers since Yogananda left his body. Does anyone know if there were any instructions left by Yogananda in this regard or has it just been up to the BOD, like so much else? If it were okay back in the early days, why wouldn't it be okay now? It seems like it would be so much more balanced that way. Not only that, then there would be enough ministers to "go around" so to speak. Comments anyone??

Re: Why no lay ministers?
A quick read of other related topics on Walrus will give you the answers you look for.
Short version? CONTROL, DOGMA, CONTROL !!!

SRF has its own 'inqusition', naturally IT MUST keep the teachings "pure"(i.e. one way, their way) and it needs total control. Monks are much easier to control since their livelihood depends on SRF.

There is no growth, no discussion, no new take, no new investigation in SRF nowdays (excepts the courageous but mostly failed attempt by the Spiritual Life Cmt. to change the way monastic relate to each other ), it is granitic dogma and stagnation. Lay disciples ministers? Are you kidding?

Re: Why no lay ministers?
The fact that there is nothing new or no new interpretations doesn't bother me as much as the fact that the bad ladies don't even practice the old! How many monastics and employees (and members) have left SRF as a result of finding out what they are really like?

Millions have come! However currently there are only about 40,000 active members. Do the math.

Re: Why no lay ministers?
Well Garden,

Yogacharya Oliver Black, born 1893, was a lay minister empowered to give Kryia which he did until his death in September of 1989. He gave his last Kryia initaition in the summer of that year. There's been a few others that act as ministers with specific local meditation grouops here and there that you don't hear of. Yogacharya was the only one I know of who was "allowed" by MC to give Kriya.

Believe me, he took that duty lightly with JOY in his heart. No quaking at politics.

Peace,

J

To gardendiva:

Among those giving the first Kriya initiations were Nerode, Panditji, Ranendra Das, Ma Durga, Lewis, Kamala, Black, Jotin (Premananda). Most began before SRF became a church in March, 1935 and when it was more of a cooperative fellowship. Yogananda, Nerode, Jotin gave all four initiations. I don't know whether any of the rest did.

in seriousness and fun
Hello gardendiva,

srf has left some duties incomplete....

gardendiva, we join you at the feet of being in the present
awareness
and acceptance

also this day if we may
as srf has not done this small duty in any kind way

you now are a lay minister
and have been for some time
as your feelings and thought to us you calmly administer

lay minister and sister
may your moment be bright
in seriousness and fun
we listen to you when we are not in some fight

i sleep in the day
and write here in the night
in both cases, compassionate one, i say
in both day and night, for several of us,
you sweeten the way

I clicked the above link and then searched around on the site. Someone posted a WARNING that they may have spread a virus to others on that board....

Reading their posts reminded me of that druged foggy feeling of not thinking for yourself. I can't tell you how good it feels to be free of that cult.

Well I guess a cult is where you end up when life gets so hard that you decide to let an organization think for you.

Thank you God for setting me free and giving me strength to think for myself again.
