Cherry Valley Ashram
Does anyone know if SRF still owns the Cherry Valley ashram? I saw a picture of it in one of the magazines about 15 or so years ago. The monastics used to bring peaches grown on the grounds of Cherry Valley each year to the Temples for the householders.

Haven't heard much about it since. Today there is a fire raging in that area and it set me to thinking about whether Cherry Valley still exists as a monks ashram.

If SRF still operates it who is the monk in charge? Why isn't it listed in the magazine in the back where all the ashrams are listed?

The Cherry Valley property is still owned by SRF and is rented to non-members. During the time period that you mentioned, 8 varieties of peaches, plums, nectarines, a few apples, and some other produce was grown there. The managers of the orchard were John Mackey (Brother Jivananda) and Ron Fisher (Br. Ronald). Br. Lou spent a few years there before retiring to 29 Palms prior to his death.

Carbo...,

Thanks for that information, and excuse me for taking so long to reply. When I first posted this thread I looked for a few days to see if anyone was answering, but then the whole thread seemed to disappear. I took it to mean that it wasn't appropriate for this site!

Anyway just now I found your answer. That's interesting that SRF leases the property out, I thought that they were having trouble finding enough suitable housing for all the monks? I very distinctly remember a photograph in the magazine showing the monks on ladders harvesting the fruit from the trees. Cherry Valley is a cool place, kinda near to the city, yet in the country.

Thanks for all of your "inside baseball" knowledge that you share in response to my questions. I didn't know Br. Lee, but I saw Jivananda at HV about 10 years ago when he gave the Sunday lecture while I was on retreat. He is someone who isn't really out in the public eye, but I guess that true of some of the older monks, Dharma, Achala, etc. etc. They must have handed the reins over to the Satya's, the Mitra's, etc.

Does anyone know if the Fishers, Ron and his mother Betty (Brahmachari Ronald and Brahmacharini Betty--one of Meera Ma's assistants at Hollywood ashram, the other one was a terror!), are still monastics in SRF? Betty was a wonderful person--really kind, sincere, and helpful, but I left Hollywood and CA almost 15 years ago so I don't have a clue.

(Looks like no one knows them.)

I believe that Betty was at Encinitas for many of her later years. I think she passed away a few years ago. Not completely sure.
