Reply 		Hanging Yourself
A friend of mine called me today to tell me that someone we have known for more than twenty years, from the beginning of our active (in my case, former) church involvement, had hanged himself in his house. His wife found him. I remember the optimism we shared in the beginning, the sense of brotherhood. Looking into the future we would have seen ourselves as highly advanced yogis by now. How it all eroded. Monks and nuns leaving the order one after another. The stories. The disillusionment. The church going on as if none of this mattered.

My father was a naval officer who believed in military discipline. He had been expelled from school and was facing a grim future. A good math aptitude and some family connections got him into the naval academy and turned his life around. He was always grateful for it. He left the navy after a few years and went on to become a millionaire. His best friend stayed. His son hanged himself from a tree in the yard. I felt like doing that for a very long time. I must have known exactly where to go.

Ramssees, my condolences on losing your friend. I think I know the person you're describing. When I spoke to Bro. Bimulananda about him, Brother said he went to the memorial service for the hanged man and the devotees at that service apparently focussed on God's forgiveness, instead of the usual retribution stuff that we hear regarding suicide. Personally, I found that extremely comforting. I wish I knew what drove him to suicide. He was usually very energetic, but he also had a moody side. So do I, and so do lots of people. I always wonder why some people kill themselves and some don't, even with seemingly similar backgrounds.
