Why we call them Indians - another explanation
Christopher Columbus, going ashore in the Antilles (Caribbean), was struck by the profound well-being of the island Arawak. ("There is not in the world a better nation. They love their neighbors as themselves, and their discourse is ever sweet and gentle.") It has been suggested that he named them Indies not because he imagined them to be inhabitants of India (which in the fifteenth century was still called Hindustan) but because he recognized that the friendly, generous Taino people lived in blessed harmony with their surroundings—una gente in Dios, a people in God.

Quoted from Indian Country by Peter Matthiessen, C 1984, page 3 para 1, ISBN 0-670-397837-3

SRF says we call them Indians because Columbus thought them from the country we now call India.
