Feng Shui

From Primitive Interpretations of the World to New Age Madness

by YellowBeard

Feng Shui is a surprisingly popular pseudoscientific practice that attempts to create a more harmonious environment by arranging items and managing space, usually within one's personal living space. Pronounced "fung shway" and literally meaning "wind and water" (referring to something presumed to exist which is invisible and elusive), it has its roots in Chinese culture and is at least a three thousand years old practice.

Feng Shui is based on the concepts of Yin and Yang (the balance and interplay between opposites), Qė (metaphysical life-force energy pronounced "chee"), and what was once believed to be the primary Five Elements of nature (wood, fire, earth, metal and water). The basic idea is to arrange one's surroundings in such a way as to allow the "invisible and elusive" energy field of Qė to flow in a more harmonious way to encourage health, wealth and improved relationships.

It's popular to this day because it's an alluring idea and it has a good motivation behind it -- an approach to live more harmoniously with nature and one's environment. The problem is that it's based on primitive ideas and interpretations of the world, and not reality based, and therefor both the traditional version of Feng Shui and the New Age versions don't actually do anything whatsoever for the improvement of health and stimulation of one's financial situation. Exercise and eating right, and careful spending, is what makes the difference, and not what direction the head of your bed is facing.

Feng Shui does have an actual effect though -- the financial gain of those selling the service. And these services usually don't come cheap. It's a quick and easy way to make a buck for those that prey on other's gullibility.

The real problem with Feng Shui is not that it's a waste of hard earned money, but that it diverts one's attention from the things in life that actually do make a difference. Focusing on Feng Shui arrangements and on what crystals to wear to improve health, sidetracks one from engaging in activities that can really make a difference, such as in the case of improving one's health, finding and engaging in a regular exercise program. So Feng Shui can actually be detrimental to one's wellbeing by causing them to lose sight with those things that really do make a difference.

Re: Feng Shui
This is something else that I won't bother to read. Again, if you believe in karma, then it is your actions that create your future and not the way you design your home. Now if you desire to make your home a Feng Shui home for decorative purposes, then have at it.
