Chanting
I'm hoping someone might post here how they approach chanting to God. It's something I'd like to do, but feel restarined and awkward. There are a few chants on "Songs of My Heart" that I really enjoy....such as "Oh God Beautiful"....but I'd like to learn more. I know there is a book entitled "Cosmic Chants" - and have heard the words have been changed...does this matter and where can I get the original wording if I need them? Along with that thought, how do I learn the music for those chants since I don't know how to read the music? Peace,

eric - who may be soon setting the neighborhood dogs off in a howling spree! :rollin

Re: Chanting
Eric, I moved this over here from the Donald Schnell thread.

When I read it, I was hoping that someone who used Yogananda's chants would respond. I think someone will, it's just that they may not have seen it yet, or are looking for the info. I'm back to being optimistic.

So......

------------------------------------------------------------

Rioo, if you are browsing, I chant in Hebrew, so I can't help you with Yogananda's chants and songs. The only thing I CAN say is that your intent when you are chanting is nearly as important as the words you are chanting. Any sincere yearning for God will draw you closer. When Jesus 'taught' his disciples to pray, I don't believe he meant 'You have to say these words, and these words only'. He was giving them an example so that they would eventually be able to develop their own prayer, from their own hearts. If you want formal Mantra, then you will have to find someone who is knowledgeable in the inner meaning of the Sanskrit sounds. A true Mantra is a vibration, not a song, and it's best that you learn this more privately. Your question sounded to me like you specifically wanted to learn more about Yogananda's English chants, and I have to leave that to others because I don't know them. I have learned Sanskrit mantras from G. Kriyananda, though, but that is not what you were asking.

With regard to what has happened here:

I think that many people have a very difficult time accepting the limitations that all of us experience and sometimes these people turn outward the energy that should be turned inward.

Re: Chanting
Eric,

People like Swami Kriyananda as well as some others, maybe Roy Davis may have the original copy of Cosmic Chants and be able to copy them for you. Also they may have the music on tape, and maybe SRF does as well. You may want to write to Ananda because maybe some of the devotees may have it as well.

Also, if you are interested in chanting to other chant tapes outside of SRF, Krishna Das does some wonderfual chants and has the words written down in the cassettes and CDs. These are all in sanskrit though.

Re: Chanting
Good question, Chanting! SRF's most innocent practice. Frankly, I wouldn't think that altering the words one whit changes the chant in any way. Listen to Etz regarding intention and all aspects of chanting.

The Cosmic Chants book will give you SRF's view of "how to" (thy're the how to guys, I guess, always with the how to:-).
But regarding your question as to changes made, I DO know that at our center the line in I Will Sing Thy Name, "get all drunk" was changed to, "feel Thy Joy."

We did have several members of AA in our group.
