Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ
Well, I went to see Mel Gibson's new movie on the last hours of Christ's life yesterday morning. This was by far the MOST violent movie I've ever seen (to paraphrase Roger Ebert, who was RIGHT). It was bloody beyond anything I could have immagined or expected. But, I can't say it was a "bad" moive. The film was also the most emotionally engaging film I've ever seen. I literally cried for two hours. I've never seen a film where I was sucked to totally into its reality. But, I can't say it was a "good" movie either.

It did what it was supposed to do: It made real the huge sacrifice of this great Master for humanity. While probably not terribly historically accurate in the detalis (nails through the palms instead of through the wrists), the FEELING of everything was VERY accurate. The intense level of physical pain, the clothing and living conditions. I FELT the lashes of the cat-o-nine-tails on His back, I FELT the nails go into His hands.

This is a movie about emotion, about sacrifice, and most of all, about pain. If you believe that you cannot tollerate intense, realistic physical violence onscreen, DO NOT GO see this film. If you are a Christian, or where raised Christian, and want an experience, want this Master's sacrifice to come alive in your consicousness, consider seeing the film. I say consider, not GO... Becuase seein this film colored my entire Ash Wednesday. I was inward, meek, and only talked when I had to all day. My wife stayed home and cried and slept all afternoon. It was emotionally draining, it was dark, and it made me reflect on not only Christ, but on all atrocities humanity has comitted against one another throughout the ages. The only thing I can say for certain about this movie is that it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can't immagine anyone wanting to see it a second time.
